So.....lesson no.1 when it comes to Mexico City breakfast dining - Never try to order boiled eggs (huevos)!
It is clearly an alien concept to the Mexican people, who do everything with eggs....other than boil them. Just like having fried eggs with chilli salsa is to us, which is one of the local favourites.
Anyway, I didnt fancy Chilli with my eggs this morning, so I asked simply if I could just have plain ol boiled eggs with some toast - "Si Senor" I was told...."Great!" Nem followed my lead and asked for the same. A few short minutes later the said eggs arrived, rolling around loose in a big breakfast bowl. They looked nice, they were however RAW!.
They had been slightly warmed though, which was a bonus. Not wanting to be rude as our waiter had gone to so much trouble to try and deliver what we wanted I tucked in. I dont know if you have ever tried to eat a raw egg with a teaspoon but its not that easy, in fact a straw would have been more suited to the job. Naomi pointed out that it wouldnt be a good idea to get salmonella at this early point in the trip, so I consoled myself mentally with the fact that I saw Bear Ghrylls eat a raw egg from a nest that he happened across in the wilderness, so if its good enough for Bear, its good enough for me.
On reflection though, this is the man that has been known to squeeze a steaming pile of elephant poo into his mouth to extract the water...yummy!
we are about to get a bus to Oaxaca shortly, which is 6 hours south of here, so I'm thinking that I'll go and take some travel sickness pills and see if I cant hold onto my raw egg breakfast. We are going to visit the Hierve el Agua waterfalls - picture above.
Hi Brett and Naomi, well... about the Huevos......if you want a boiled egg you should try saying: "Dos huevos cocidos por tres minutos por favor". If you wont hard boiled eggs then substitute "tres" for "quatro". The word "Dos" means two, so if you want tree of four eggs, use "tres" or "Quatro". Enjoy your eggs Toze/Dad
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion would be to try Huevos Rancheros; couple of fried eggs, corn tortilla, chili, potatoes and refried beans or if you're feeling more than pekish ask for a mexican steak breakfast, I think they call them Caballo Montado but I may be wrong; again a couple of eggs, steak with chili salsa, refried beans and torilas. That should see you through to dinner. yum yum yum. Give it a week and you won't touch a breaki without a splashing of tobasco
