Brett with Azurial - A local brother who is planning on becoming an elder!
The public meeting at Puerto Escondido
Ministry in Puerto with Ben, Mike & Brett
So after the dreaded bus journey from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido we arrived at about half 9 to the sort of heat you feel when you open an oven door – we appreciate most of you are suffering cold, but this was some serious heat, the type where you have a shower, and then immediately you are sweating and feel gross!! So boy were we glad to get to the hostel… well the hostel… great pics on the website, but met by a crazy english guy in his 40s and his crazy first in command 20 something American boy that had the dirtiest blackest feet you’ve ever seen… not letting these strange goings on put us off we went to look at out room and picked the best of a bad 2. A few minutes later we were out of there after we realized we had fleas in our room and Brett had been bitten loads in a really short space of time. So we checked into somewhere nearer the beach… not great but it did for a couple of nights.
So we spent a lovely 2 days with Mike and Holly and the others from the newly formed English cong thre in Puerto Escondido. I think there were about 22 at the Sunday meeting (9am!!) They really looked after us, cooked for us, took us out to some nice places to eat and filled us in on how they do things. There’s so much work to be done, and not just Puerto Escondido, the more people you speak to the more areas you hear of where there are lots of English groups just on the brink of becoming a cong, or even one area near Puerto where there’s just one couple doing the English! So if anyones looking for a change of scenery…Mexico!!
So after a sweaty and enjoyable couple of days we boarded a 13 hour freezing night bus where we heard badly dubbed Mamma Mia and a host of other bad films played as we were trying to sleep, coupled with the drivers trumpety Parisian music.
We woke to a lovely bright San Cristobal de las Casas, a town nestled in a valley, where if you look up and down the street to the farthest point you can see lush hills encamped on the horizon. When you look at the tree lined squares, the bustling markets where Mexican Indian women weave and sell their scarves and blankets, and the brightly animated buildings you realize that this town is a colourful splash amongst this country’s vast hills and imagine that if you were to see it from up high it would be a little mish mash of bright colours amongst a vast area of heavy green. It is the cutest most chilled and colourful place, just beautiful. The temperature is great, 25 with a breeze and bright blue sky. Cold at night which warrants us building a fire in the chimney in our room at the hostel, a VAST difference from the unbearable heat of Puerto.
Tonight Brett ate Sushi… on the menu there was a sushi that had cheese in it. We think this is a Mexican twist and that the Japanese would not approve.
Tomorrow we visit the Sumidero Canyon!
Lots of love and cheesy sushi xx
